Alice-Miranda thought she was dreaming when she heard her aunt’s voice and felt a hand on her shoulder.

‘Sweetheart, I need you to wake up,’ Charlotte whispered.

The girl roused from her slumber and realised it wasn’t a dream at all. She rolled over and rubbed her eyes, trying to focus in the dim light. ‘Is it time to get up already?’ Alice-Miranda’s words were wrapped around a yawn. She pushed herself against the pillows and saw that her aunt was dressed in a beautiful peacock-blue gown – ready for a party, not for bed. ‘Is something the matter?’ she asked, suddenly wide awake.

‘I need to get to the hospital and I couldn’t wake Magdalena no matter how hard I tried,’ Charlotte replied. ‘Lawrence has been involved in an accident on set. I’m not sure exactly what’s happened, but he’s been taken to Cedars-Sinai.’

Alice-Miranda blinked as the words sunk in. She nodded, trying to put on a brave face. ‘Millie and I can listen for the twins and if we need anything I’m sure Venetia can help.’ Alice-Miranda’s eyes fell on the clock. It was just after eleven and, by the looks of it, her aunt had not long arrived home from the gala she’d been attending.

Charlotte leaned forward and hugged Alice-Miranda, her voice catching in her throat. ‘Thank you, darling.’

The child smiled at her aunt and took the portable baby monitor. ‘Uncle Lawrence will be fine. You know he will. He’s completely bulletproof.’

Charlotte stood up. Her cheeks were drained of colour and she looked as if she were holding back tears. ‘Of course. I’ll call as soon as I know anything.’ She gave Alice-Miranda a quick kiss on the top of her head and disappeared from the room.

Alice-Miranda stretched her arms and did her best to banish any terrible thoughts from her head. By now Millie had woken up too.

‘Was Charlotte in here?’ the girl asked sleepily.

Alice-Miranda switched on the lamp beside her bed and lay down on her side to face Millie. ‘There’s been an accident at the studio and Uncle Lawrence has been taken to hospital.’

Millie was out of bed like a shot. ‘What happened?’ she demanded.

‘Aunt Charlotte doesn’t know yet, but she’s gone to be with him. We’re watching the twins in case they wake up,’ Alice-Miranda said, gesturing to the baby monitor on the bedside table.

Millie nodded. ‘Do you want to go and get something to drink?’

Alice-Miranda followed her friend out onto the landing, where they ran into Lucas and Sep, who had woken too.

‘What are you doing up?’ Lucas asked.

Another door opened further along the corridor and Jacinta and Sloane emerged.

‘What’s going on?’ Sloane asked, pulling her dressing-gown over her shoulders.

‘Come on, we’ll tell you over a cup of hot chocolate,’ Alice-Miranda said, and the six friends padded down the stairs and into the kitchen.
