Alice-Miranda thought she was dreaming when she heard her auntâs voice and felt a hand on her shoulder.
âSweetheart, I need you to wake up,â Charlotte whispered.
The girl roused from her slumber and realised it wasnât a dream at all. She rolled over and rubbed her eyes, trying to focus in the dim light. âIs it time to get up already?â Alice-Mirandaâs words were wrapped around a yawn. She pushed herself against the pillows and saw that her aunt was dressed in a beautiful peacock-blue gown â ready for a party, not for bed. âIs something the matter?â she asked, suddenly wide awake.
âI need to get to the hospital and I couldnât wake Magdalena no matter how hard I tried,â Charlotte replied. âLawrence has been involved in an accident on set. Iâm not sure exactly whatâs happened, but heâs been taken to Cedars-Sinai.â
Alice-Miranda blinked as the words sunk in. She nodded, trying to put on a brave face. âMillie and I can listen for the twins and if we need anything Iâm sure Venetia can help.â Alice-Mirandaâs eyes fell on the clock. It was just after eleven and, by the looks of it, her aunt had not long arrived home from the gala sheâd been attending.
Charlotte leaned forward and hugged Alice-Miranda, her voice catching in her throat. âThank you, darling.â
The child smiled at her aunt and took the portable baby monitor. âUncle Lawrence will be fine. You know he will. Heâs completely bulletproof.â
Charlotte stood up. Her cheeks were drained of colour and she looked as if she were holding back tears. âOf course. Iâll call as soon as I know anything.â She gave Alice-Miranda a quick kiss on the top of her head and disappeared from the room.
Alice-Miranda stretched her arms and did her best to banish any terrible thoughts from her head. By now Millie had woken up too.
âWas Charlotte in here?â the girl asked sleepily.
Alice-Miranda switched on the lamp beside her bed and lay down on her side to face Millie. âThereâs been an accident at the studio and Uncle Lawrence has been taken to hospital.â
Millie was out of bed like a shot. âWhat happened?â she demanded.
âAunt Charlotte doesnât know yet, but sheâs gone to be with him. Weâre watching the twins in case they wake up,â Alice-Miranda said, gesturing to the baby monitor on the bedside table.
Millie nodded. âDo you want to go and get something to drink?â
Alice-Miranda followed her friend out onto the landing, where they ran into Lucas and Sep, who had woken too.
âWhat are you doing up?â Lucas asked.
Another door opened further along the corridor and Jacinta and Sloane emerged.
âWhatâs going on?â Sloane asked, pulling her dressing-gown over her shoulders.
âCome on, weâll tell you over a cup of hot chocolate,â Alice-Miranda said, and the six friends padded down the stairs and into the kitchen.
